Short version: no accounts, no servers of ours, no tracking. Below is exactly what the app touches and why.

01Summary

Nightpiece has no accounts, no servers of its own, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The sky is calculated on your phone.

The app makes one kind of internet request of its own: it downloads the public orbit data of the International Space Station from CelesTrak. This page lists everything the app touches, why, and where it goes.

02What the app uses

DataWhyLeaves your phone?
LocationTo work out the sky above you and true northNot to us. Place-name lookup is done by Apple (see Location)
Camera imageLive backdrop in the AR viewNo. Never recorded or saved
Motion sensorsTo know where the phone is pointingNo
NotificationsLocal alerts you chooseNo. No push server
ISS orbit data downloadTo draw the space station and predict passesA request to CelesTrak (see Network)
PurchasesTo unlock Nightpiece ProHandled by Apple (see Purchases)

03Location

Nightpiece asks for your location while you are using the app, at approximate (kilometre-level) accuracy. It never asks for background location.

The location is used on your device to calculate what is above you (the Moon, planets, space station passes, twilight, meteor showers, eclipses) and to find true north for the AR view. The coordinates, the name of the nearest place and its time zone are saved on your phone and shared with the Nightpiece widgets. They are never sent to us.

To show a place name, iOS sends your coordinates to Apple's geocoding service. When you search for a city by name, the text you type is sent to the same Apple service. Apple handles those requests under its own privacy policy and we do not receive them.

You can decline location and choose a city by hand. Everything works the same, except that the AR view then uses magnetic north.

04Camera

The AR view shows the rear camera behind the sky so you can see what is where. The live image is shown on screen only. It is not recorded, saved, analysed or sent anywhere, and the app has no photo or video capture and no access to your photo library.

You can turn the camera backdrop off with the camera button in the AR view, or deny camera access in iOS Settings. The sky keeps working on a dark background.

05Motion sensors

The gyroscope, accelerometer and compass are read through Apple's Core Motion to know where the phone is pointing. The readings are used in memory, moment by moment, to move the sky. They are not stored and not sent.

06Notifications

Alerts for space station passes, meteor shower peaks, full moons and eclipses are local notifications. They are scheduled on your phone from your saved place and on-device calculations. There is no push server and no device token. The app asks iOS for permission to show notifications, and you can change that at any time in iOS Settings. Some alerts are marked Time Sensitive so they can reach you in time.

07Network requests

Nightpiece makes one request of its own:

RequestWhat it sendsHow often
https://celestrak.org/NORAD/elements/gp.php?CATNR=25544&FORMAT=tle (GET)Only what any web request carries: your IP address and the standard identification of the app and iOS version. No location, no identifier, no account. At most about every 12 hours, and only when the space station is needed. The last copy is kept on your phone.

CelesTrak is a third-party service and handles requests under its own policy. If it cannot be reached, the space station shows that it needs a connection and everything else keeps working. The Privacy Policy and Terms links in the app open in your browser. Widgets make no network requests.

08Purchases

Subscriptions and one-time purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not see your name, email address, payment details or Apple ID. On your device, StoreKit only tells the app whether Nightpiece Pro is active, and the app keeps that yes or no so its widgets know too. If you redeem an offer code, Apple's own redemption sheet handles it; we never see the code.

09What is stored on your phone

ItemWhere
Your place: coordinates, place name, time zoneApp storage shared with widgets (App Group)

The last downloaded space station orbit data and its timeApp storage shared with widgets

All of it is removed when you delete the app. Like any app data, it can be part of your own iPhone or iCloud backups, which Apple controls.

10No tracking

Nightpiece contains no analytics, no crash-reporting service, no advertising, no third-party SDKs and no tracking of any kind. It does not use the advertising identifier and does not show the App Tracking Transparency prompt.

This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Its fonts and images are served from the site itself. Like any web host, the hosting provider (Vercel) may keep standard server logs, which include IP addresses.

11Third parties

  • Apple: place-name lookup, the App Store and StoreKit, and notifications.
  • CelesTrak: public space station orbit data.
  • Vercel: hosts this website only.

12Retention and deletion

We keep no personal data about you, so there is nothing on our side to retain or delete. On your phone you can change your place or settings in the app, revoke location or camera access in iOS Settings, or delete the app to remove all of its data.

13Children

Nightpiece collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

14Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing to access, correct, export or delete on our side, and nothing that we sell or share. If you have a question about privacy, write to us.

15Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new version number and date.
